Putnam County ~ covering
an area of about 235 square miles. It is north of Westchester and south of
Dutchess County, stretching from the Hudson River to the Connecticut border.
Accessible by car or
train, Putnam County offers beauty and charm in all four seasons, with views and
scenery to rival the best in New England. Antique shops, fine restaurants and
local museums beckon the traveler, while skiing, golf, hiking and fishing are
available for the more adventurous.
Putnam County
Veterans Memorial Park
Is located on Gipsy
Trail Road off Route 301 in Carmel. A monument was constructed by the Putnam
County Veterans Council, to honor the men and women who served in the U.S.
military. The 200 acre park has a picnic area with grills, marked hiking trails,
camping for scouts, volleyball and horseshoe courts, cross-county ski trails,
ice skating, and swimming. For more information about membership in the Putnam

Bicycling
Is popular throughout
the County. There are two types of trails available. In addition, the Putnam
Visitors Bureau sponsors an Tour de Putnam, annual a day of specially
designed bike tours through the scenic countryside with special stops at local
historic sites and landmarks. Call the Putnam Visitors Bureau for further

Cycling on Roads
There is a
highly publicized, well laid out route. This route winds around reservoirs and
can range in distance from 13 to 30 miles. It starts at the Putnam Plaza
Shopping Center on Route 6 in Carmel. This trail passes many points of
historical interest.
Mountain Bikers
There are two
mountain bike trails in Fahnestock Park. The first trail begins at the picnic
grounds at Elton Pond near the park administrative offices on Route 301. This
trail extends to Peekskill Hollow Road is more than 10 miles in length. The
second trail, approximately 5 miles long, begins on Stow Road, just off Denny town
Road, and loops southward past a scenic vista back to Stow Road.
Fishing
There are nine New
York City Reservoirs in Putnam County, all of which allow fishing year-round. In
order to fish at any of these reservoirs, you must have:
Permits to use
rowboats on the reservoirs are also issued at 1 Belden Road. The boats may not
be moved from lake to lake. The office at 1 Belden Road is open Tuesday
Saturday 8am 3:45pm.
Fishing licenses can
be obtained at any one of the 6 Town Halls in the County or at local bait and
tackle shops.
In addition to the NYC
Reservoir System, there are numerous other lakes and streams, plus the Hudson
River in which to fish. Maps are available at almost all bait and tackle stores.
Boating and
Canoeing
Putnam County has many
picturesque lakes, ponds and waterways that provide excellent boating and
canoeing opportunities. There are boat launches in Kent, Lake Mahopac, Putnam
Valley, at the Great Swamp and Fahnestock State Park
Golf Clubs and
Driving Ranges
Putnam County has five
golf clubs, two driving ranges and a mini-golf course.
Hiking
Visitors to the Hudson
Highlands region of the County can enjoy some of the finest hiking in the
eastern United States. Hiking trails are available at Fahnestock State Park,
Hudson Highlands State Park, Clear Lake Boy Scout Reservation, North Redoubt,
Walter G. Merritt County Park and Cranberry Mountain Wildlife Management Area.
